Hi everyone,

In 2 weeks I will have an entire week off of work (and my college classes are out between summer and fall for 3 weeks!) and I'd like to use it to go on an impromptu roadtrip. I have lived in America for 9 years, and have never been out of Florida since moving here. Best case scenario would be somewhere that I can easily sleep in my car. I have a 2007 Mercury Grand Marquis and am currently living in Pensacola, basically on the border with Mobile.

Do NOT drive through Virginia!

New Orleans? Or maybe Austin? I've heard that both are supposed to be pretty cool, and neither is all that far.

Or maybe Myrtle Beach, SC. I love the Carolinas. Great food and some awesome beaches.

whatever you do, download the road trippers app. They've got a kinja actually. Exploding startup out of Cincinnati that will help you find hidden gems, regardless of where you decide to go

I'm keeping an open mind here, but ideally I'd like to spend one entire day driving there, spend a few days seeing sights/experiencing the city/environment, and the final day driving back. Or, 2.5 days of driving out, with no particular set city to spend more time in, then 2.5 of heading back, perhaps a different route. Just something to get me out of Florida for a little while.

I would suggest the drive over the North Cascades Highway, over Sherman Pass and in to Idaho and Montana, but that seems a bit far away from Florida. Maybe a trip to New Orleans?

I generally don't speed, but I did read the article about spending the weekend in jail for that. Seems harsh.

I have definitely considered Austin. Did not think of Myrtle Beach though! According to Google it is just over 10 hours away, which is doable. Right on the coast too! (duh, it's a beach)

You're in for luck. Some of the best driving roads in the world, including the Blue Ridge Parkway and the Tail of the Dragon are in the states directly north of you. Even if you don't go for those, I would 100% suggest that you head north, through the Appalachian mountains. Some of the most beautiful hiking and driving in the entire country, starting in the north of Alabama and Georgia.

It's a really nice beach area too. I went there for a family reunion several years ago. Pretty much the same distance as Austin. Most of the other places I'd suggest would be either West Coast, Southwest (mainly thinking Colorado or Vegas), or quite a ways further up the the East Coast. All probably too far. Are you going on your own?

Yes, I live alone so it's not like I can just be like, "BROTHER, DRIVE FOR ME WHILE I SLEEP". I think the West Coast is just too far for this one. Austin is about as far west as I'd go.

Blue Ridge Parkway? I looked that up and there are multiple but I see one is in the Carolinas. I could drive up there and stop in Atlanta on the way, which would be great.

Yeah, that Blue Ridge Parkway . Even if you don't go for that particular road, the whole area is beautiful.

As a fellow NWF, I would say go up I-65 and in Birmingham head up toward Chattanooga. From there, go through the Blue Ridge mountains in Georgia, NC, and WV. I've been part of this way from Pa. back to Milton and it was beautiful. You will have to go through some of Virginia though.

I'd say just go on a roadtrip and get a taste of a few states/areas. Get a road atlas and just look for interesting routes. Your car is probably plenty big enough to sleep in, just pull over when you start to get tired and sleep at a truck stop. Could also pack a tent too, I've found that's fun to do on roadtrips.

Also, check out the Barber Motorsports Park musuem:

just outside Birmingham, AL
